Misfit

Misfit was the graphic novelization of Jackson Shelton’s life leading up to the events of Paradise 33, which would culminate in a sequel in which he loses his life.
At some point I had decided the entirety of the events of Paradise 33 actually took place in Jackie’s mind as a guilty fever dream, thus making the real ending Velvet Noses, a planned sequel that was also partially started but never finished.

Born in New York, Jackie is the single child of his wealthy philanthropist parents, a prodigy in school, and extremely talented show jumper.
Jackie’s natural skill on horseback led to him enlisting in local shows and eventually going national. 6 years into his career, his filly Missfitt endured a severe injury during a show and was put down. Jackie was also injured during this event and as a result became addicted to prescription pain pills.
Disgusted by the drive of others to push him back into the sport with a new horse, Jackie moved to Florida to be with his parents.
6 months later his father endured a heart attack and passed away suddenly during an argument about Jackie’s addiction. His mother followed suit, unable to deal with the pain of losing her love, she committed suicide 4 weeks later.
Jackie sold the home and moved into the streets, his mind burdened with death and grief. He overdosed, but was saved by a woman known as Melanie and an anarchist group known as Amence.
Jackie befriended the group and aligned himself with them, while eventually going on to date Melanie. His addiction continued in secret as he attempted to fight it without outside assistance.
2 years later, Melanie left him after his second overdose, he finally attended rehab and officially came clean as a result.
One drug addiction overcome later, Jackie began attending ex-addict meetings where he met Blair and smoked a joint outside with him, while discussing the particulars of the universe and society.
Blair later tells Jackie that he has a spare room if he wants to live somewhere fresh and new, and Jackie accepts.
